Hit a weight loss plateau? Drink to your Health!

You’re eating right.  You’re exercising.  That stupid scale just won’t budge anymore!  What happened?

Your answer may be as simple as what you drink (or don’t drink).  When your body is dehydrated, it goes into conservation mode.  That’s what it’s programmed to do.  Your muscles slow down and burn dramatically fewer calories.  Your body’s ability to burn fat for energy is restricted when there isn’t enough water around.   So, with your muscles slowed and your fat burning ability restricted, your metabolism comes screeching to a halt.  No wonder that scale won’t move!

Your body can’t distinguish between thirst and hunger.  When you are dehydrated, you will have a harder time sticking with your healthy eating plan because your body will be craving food!  Those hunger pangs are tough to ignore.

When making your healthy eating plan, don’t leave off water:

  1.  When that midday craving hits, drink a glass of water and wait 30 minutes.  If you are still feeling hungry, that’s your body’s way of telling you that you really do need more fuel.    Brink healthy food pre-packed with you.  When you’re making decisions about what to eat on an empty stomach, those decisions usually aren’t the best for your health.
  2. Carry your Hydr-8 Water Bottle with you throughout the day.  If you stay on track with your water intake goals, you can avoid those false hunger signals altogether.  The easiest cravings to fight are the ones you didn’t feel in the first place.
  3. Not satisfied with your fitness results? Now what? Create a plan of action to address each obstacle that is getting in your way!

hydr8-004What are your goals? What are you doing to attain them? Without a plan, a goal is merely a wish…and, quite frankly, you are about as likely to see your wish granted as you were to get that pony you asked Santa for when you were 9. You have to earn it. It’s not just going to happen.

So, where do you start? Well, exercise and clean eating are pretty much the consensus.

So map out your plan.

1. Make a commitment to exercise. Maybe you need to start with a short walk every day. Maybe you’re ready for tough group fitness classes or you want to train for a marathon. Whatever it is, choose something that will challenge you. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep seeing the results you’ve always seen. Challenge yourself. It will be hard. It’s supposed to be hard.

2. Make a diet plan. Don’t starve yourself. Turn your diet into a positive. Plan healthy snacks that you eat throughout the day (even if you’re not hungry yet). Eat a high fiber, low sugar diet. Fresh fruits and veggies can fill in the gap between larger meals. Keep track of what you’re eating (I like myfitnesspal.com) …and don’t lie about it. Your body keeps an accurate record of what you’re eating even if you fudge it on your exercise diary.

3. Drink your water. Seriously. Get your Hydr-8 mug and really follow your time goals. Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day in addition to water you drink at workout or at meals. If you get enough water, your body will naturally start to flush out toxins, strengthen your organs, and help you to feel energized and healthy.

4. Get enough sleep. Go to bed early and wake up early. Your body needs adequate sleep time in order to maximize the effects you get from exercise. Don’t deprive your body of rest. You won’t thank yourself later.

12 easy tips to get enough water in your diet

2. Avoid caffeinated beverages when possible. Caffeine acts as a diuretic and drains water from your body. When you drink a caffeinated beverage, you are losing more water than you are putting in.

3. Drink extra water when you do a strenuous workout. You lose a lot of water when you sweat. Your body needs you to replace that water in order to get the maximum benefits of your workout. If you are sweating a lot, you should consider a beverage with electrolytes (like Gatorade or Powerade). You still get to count the water in these as long as you choose a non-caffeinated option!

4. Change the flavor. There are many zero-calorie flavoring agents that can help to occasionally “spice up” your water. If you prefer to stay away from artificial sweeteners, you can try flavoring your water with cut fresh fruit.

5. Set a reminder on your phone. There are apps available that can send you a text or an alert at specific times of day. You could set them to remind you just before you reach your next Hydr-8 goal so you can drink that water quickly if you had forgotten.

6. Carry your water bottle with you everywhere. Make a goal to drink 1 cup when you are stopped at a stoplight or before you get out of the car at each destination.

7. Each time a craving for food hits (especially between meals), drink 8 ounces of water instead. It’s no secret that sometimes our bodies think we’re hungry when we’re really just thirsty. After you drink your water, wait it out for 20 minutes and see if your craving goes away.

9. Make a rule for yourself to drink 8 ounces each time your favorite TV show reaches a commercial break. If it’s sports that you watch, drink 8 ounces at the beginning, 1/2 time, and end or at each quarter.
